The City of Vieste

Vieste is a small town on the most eastern part on the Gargano penninsula. It is a small fishing village that offers the turist many colorful sights, cultures and tradition. The blue of the water is one of the most memorable aspects of the visit.

The sea is clear and clean, the color is deep and rich. For many years Vieste has been the recipient of the highest environmental awards for the cleanest sea water in italy. The water is particularly amazing when visiting the marine grottoes.

There are many of these sea caves along the southern coast of vieste. They are both very real and unbelievable. The green of the nature, too, is remarkable. The experience of walking through the "Macchia Mediterranea" into the forest is breathtaking.

The macchia meditteranea is an ecoculture that is found only in the mediteranean. It is a unique meeting of special plant, trees and animals. The turist's arrival to the maccia mediterranea is marked by the distinct perfume of the nature. The forest, Foresta Umbra, also has it's unique environment the tall trees create a canopy and to be underneath it is stirring and profound. the gold of the sand is rich and inviting. There are hundreds of beaches, large and small, quiet and exiting.

At the beach the visitor can find many tipical activities in this atypical town. The most popular activities include sailing, winsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing and good old fashioned swimming. From the beaches there is access to stunning in lets and coves, and some are accessible only by boat.

There are also many private beaches with amenities and luxuries. All along the rocky shore are cliffs and rocks that nature has decorated. Among the rocks are hundreds of rustic piers. Many resturants have their own fisherman who catch dinner off of these piers.

The most popular activities include sailing, winsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing and good old fashioned swimming.

The history of vieste is soaked red in blood. Between the 15th and 16th centuries the town was attacked by pirates from all over mediteranean, aspecially Turkey. In ancient time Vieste was an attractive strategic location for conquerrors and war-like peoples. In the historic section of the village there is a rock called chianca amara where thousands of viestani were decapitated by the turkish leader Dragut rais.

At the night lights from the castle built by kind federico the 2nd of svevia can be seen from all over Vieste. Now the red of vieste is visible in the magnificent sunset. When visiting this wondelful village the turist must spend the night on the beach at least once to watch the sunset and the sunrise.
